While you are reading my posts, you might frequently come across arabic words like Insha-Allah, Masha-Allah and few other. For all those who are not so sure of what they mean, here is a list of commonly used words/phrases and their meaning! 🙂
- Bismillah – In the name of Allah (used when beginning something)
- La iIaha illa Allah – There is no God but Allah
- Assalamualaikum – Peace be unto you (When a Muslim meets someone)
- Wa’alaikum assalam – And upon you be peace (Reply to Assalamualaikum)
- Alhamdulillah – Praise belongs to Allah (Usually used to thank God)
- Subhanallah – Free(from imperfections) is Allah. (Generally used to express amazement)
- Masha’Allah– Allah has willed it(Used when congratulating a person or when talking about some good quality of a person)
- Insha’Allah– If Allah wills it (Used when talking about any future event)
- Allahu Akbar – Allah is the Greatest (Generally used to express amazement when coming across any of Allah’s creations and mercies)
- Astughfirulla – Forgive Me Allah
- Jazakallahu Khair – May Allah reward you with good. (Used to thank a person)
- Wa iyyakum – And unto you (Reply to the above)
- Barakallahu feek – May the blessings of Allah be upon you (I usually use this as a reply to Jazakallahu Khair)
- A’udhubillah – I seek refuge in Allah
- Subhanahu wa ta’ala (SWT) – Free from imperfection and exalted is He (can be used when taking the name of Allah)
- Sallalhu ‘alayhi wa sallam (S.A.W) -Peace and blessing of Allah be upon him(p.b.u.h) (Used when mentioning the name of Prophet Muhammed(pbuh))
- ‘Alayhi salaam (A.S) -Upon him be peace (Used when mentioning the name of other prophets (peace be upon them all))
- Radhiallahu’anhu (R.A) – May Allah be pleased with them (Used when the name of any of the companions or wives of the prophet is mentioned)
